Evaluation of General Sources

There will always be controversy when it comes to health. Everyone has their own beliefs of the “best” way to treat something. In these two articles the strategy in question concerns the Anterior Cruciate Ligament, more commonly known as the ACL.

Author: Donald Fithian, MD. He is the Fellowship Director in San Diego. He is a surgeon that specializes in knee and shoulder reconstruction.

Last Updated: The article does not say when it was most recently updated.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to point out the controversies associated with certain techniques used to preform a full ACL reconstruction and whether or not it leads to osteoarthritis (OA).

Graphics: There are no graphics on this website other than the picture of the author. This helps offer validity to the article because the reader can relate the name of the author to a real face.

Position on Subject: The article states that reconstructive surgery of the ACL does not restore the knee to the function it was before injury, as misconceived by most people. Fithian takes the position that surgery will not be perfect and because of that there will be an onset of negative side effects such as OA.

Purpose: The purpose of this article was to talk about the negatives that are associated with an ACL rupture. One thing that was talked about was whether or not Osteoarthritis is existent in patients after they receive surgery of their ACL.

Position on Subject: The position on this article is that ACL surgery causes a couple of problems post surgery. One of those problems is OA.
